Orange (Citrus sinensis) and Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) Extract Blend

Orange fruit extract is from sweet oranges, the fruit of the Citrus sinensis tree. Oranges are a very good source of vitamin C and a good source of dietary fiber and folate. Grapefruit is a citrus fruit that is a cross between the sweet orange and the pomelo. Grapefruit extract concentrates beneficial flavonoids. In a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, a proprietary blend of orange and grapefruit extracts were shown to have a positive effect on gut health, both in the composition and quantity of gut microflora and also in the production of short-chain fatty acids, in particular butyrate. Citrus flavonoids released from the extracts support increasing glutathione levels and decreasing the presence of reactive oxygen species, which helps strengthen and support gut barrier function and integrity. In addition, the flavonoids are metabolized by gut microbiota to produce butyrate in addition to other SCFA’s. Increased butyrate production has been shown to support the immune system by promoting a healthy response to the NF-kB protein complex. Butyrate also has local energy effects on the gut barrier function and promotes nutrient absorption.1
